Though it's early days in their long career, David Gedge's cheerfully bitter worldview and brilliantly glum wordplay was fully formed by this point, as was the band's musically punishing attack that was built on hummingbird fast guitars and thumping drums. With the band never taking a breath or slowing down, the album can be a bit overwhelming at times, but it's also just as easy to swept away and transported by the sound and fury. A brilliant debut.
